Valkyria Chronicles Interlude: Ellet Embedded

As it has been said before, the reports purchased at Castlefront Street provide additional story content for us to follow.
This first report is a series of interviews (or attempts at interviews) with the big names of Squad 7.2015-02-15_01117

We listen in on a monologue by Ms. Ellet, in which she recaps the details about Squad 7 already known to her. Lt. Gunther in command, followed by Sgt. Melchiott, both from Bruhl… they could be childhood friends, or if Lady Luck really is with Irene, childhood sweethearts. First class material.
Sgt. Potter and Cpl. Stark come next on her list – special emphasis is given to Cpl. Stark’s nickname (“Rosie”) and the mistrust of those two regarding Welkin.
The final entry on the list is Cpl. Gunther, the tank pilot. Irene notes her Darcsen looks (blue-black hair and the traditional patterns on her clothes) and wonders where this might come from – the late Gen. Gunther wasn’t of Darcsen descent.2015-02-15_01146

Our first victims are Largo and Rosie, who happen to be at the wrong place in the wrong time, and Largo isn’t too keen on being interviewed.2015-02-15_01158Sgt. Potter is questioned about his military career, especially why he decided to stay in the force after the first war:2015-02-15_01166While Rosie has no clue whom he’s talking about, Irene takes a wild guess: Elle is no one else but Cpt. Eleanor Varrot. Of course she also asks for details about the story Largo and the Captain share, and the reaction of our first lancer clearly shows that there are some quite interesting details…2015-02-15_01174With this, he excuses himself and leaves Rosie in the hands of Ms. Ellet – who starts questioning her about her nickname. As it turns out, Cpl. Stark, commander of Squad 7’s stormtroopers, used to sing at a bar. When asked about her behaviour towards “Lt. Gunther and all those others”, she reveals a rather ugly side:2015-02-15_01188It’s quite clear that she holds prejudice against the Darcsen (and anyone else spotting eine Judennase dark hair), but as it never was shown before this scene is less powerful than it could be. We never saw her discriminating against the Darcsen before, so this lacks background. Further inquiries regarding her prejudice are cut short and Irina is left alone, but she wouldn’t be a journalist if she wouldn’t be persistent.2015-02-15_01195

The next name on her list is Isara, who is standing at the river, staring into the sky…2015-02-15_01203…and who doesn’t scare easily, which in turn freaks out Irina.
Upon being asked what she is looking for, she replies that she’d like to fly.2015-02-15_01214Ms. Ellet is (rightly) confused by this answer and asks for details, especially as Isara doesn’t seem to be much of a daydreamer. Isara’s reply that she believes herself to be rather logical, if not too logical, doesn’t help very much.
When asked about her brother she calls him a little strange sometimes, but kind and loyal. Welkin always was the first to come to help her when her heritage caused her any kind of trouble. All things considered, as Irina puts it, Isara really lucked out in the sibling department.2015-02-15_01234Which still doesn’t make much sense.

Last but not least: the interview with Welkin himself.
Irene doesn’t get far before being interrupted by Alicia, who is wondering why Irene is back already – she already interviewed Welkin today. I may be wrong here, but Sgt. Melchiott seems a little bit jealous…
Ms. Ellet grasps the opportunity to speak with Alicia while she’s here. She wanted to do so anyway.2015-02-15_01248Well… not exactly. Maybe. She has some questions. About Welkin. What he’s like. “A pretty interesting person” is what Alicia comes up with. Irina asks her to forget about their professional relationship for a moment and talk about Welkin as a guy.2015-02-15_01261Ms. Ellet seems to be more interested in a good boulevard-article than actual news, it seems. She asks Welkin for a comment on her last question, but he seems to be distracted. By a bug, as he tells her. Which is taken by Alicia as an example about him being interesting, if unpredictable.
As Irine now has Welkin’s attention, she starts questioning him. How does he feel about this war, especially as the son of a war hero? Probably the same as everyone else, he responds. He just wants it to be over. And while he might be the son of a hero, he is not. What is he fighting for? The ability to pass on the things he thinks are right. The world is made up of inherited things, among them life and a home from the parents and knowledge from teachers, but also things like prejudice – a learned behaviour. He fights for a chance to teach another generation not to make the same mistakes.
As soon as Ms. Ellet is done, Welkin returns to his bug.2015-02-15_01294Irene cancels her plans to interview the other squads after being done with seven to spend some more time near us, the player. Alicia reminds her to stay out of the combat zones for the sake of her own safety, but we’ll see how this plays out…
