Things of 2017

This is scraped of facebook, and presented mostly without comment (and translation).
I also have a distinct lack of memories over quite a lot of those.

Things that were read

Saturn Run
Ne.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet / A Closed and Common Orbit
The Wayfarers-novels by Becky Chambers.
Two by design very different books, and each in its own way so very wonderful.
If you hold any interest in slow, character-focused, soft sci-fi, throw money at your preferred vendor and get these books. Now. I mean it.

The Delirium Brief by Charles Stross
Oh. Fuck.
That’s basically all that’s left to say about The Delirium Brief by Charles Stross. The latest installment of the Laundry Files-series is just the page-turner all other Laundry-novels were, and I wholeheartedly recommend it, and Oh Fuck.
Further ramping up the score from The Nightmare Stacks, it provides a more creeping Oh Fuck compared to the pieces-audible-fall-into-place of its predecessor, but leaves the reader with the biggest mess yet. The next instalment is predicted for 2019, and I’m very tempted to send Stross an angry letter to speed that up.

Ready Player One

Halting State von Charles Stross

Rule 34 (Halting State II)

Barsk: The Elephants’ Graveyard von Lawrence M. Schoen
Uplifted Elephants.

The Last One von Alexandra Olivia

Things that were seen

Ich habe grade das Kinojahr 2017 eröffnet. Mit einem Disneyfilm. Genauer: mit Vaiana.
Ich bin zufrieden und empfehle ihn gerne.

Alright. Passengers.
This movie is well made in terms of all handiwork involved, and it looks fucking AWESOME. It might have been cut a tad tighter, but then I’d probably bitching right now about missing stuff. If you like your science fiction, give yourself a treat and do this one on the big screen.
HOWEVER, and this is where the first people start to cringe. And you are right to do so, as now comes exactly what you might expect. There are spoilers ahead. ABANDON ALL HOPE, as this totally went on longer than I planned.
This is not how this works, Passengers-edition:

  • Asteroid fields
  • Ship design (debatable, but as the Avalon is meant to be a colonisation vessel, 5k people are a joke. That’s not twice the village I grew up in. That’s less than one DF. As an inner system liner, I might buy it, but still… SPACE IS EXPENSIVE DAMMIT!)
  • Drive and/or rotational gravity (Debatable. Would need screenshots. But it feels wrong.)
  • Solar swing-bys and solar radiation (Never, under no circumstances ever I want to be within blank eye visible range of solar flares. “But the shield!” – “Didn’t even manage that mother ‘roid.” Also, radiation shelters. Not observation deck.)
  • Fusion containment, failure modes and fail save-engineering (Do not tell me that a Tokamak-by-visual-design (or any other fusion reactor) does not break it’s process in case ANYTHING goes wrong – or tell me from the beginning that we’re in space magic territory.)
  • Redundant engineering (None of these things would have happened, had ANYONE EVER read the book. And the book has been mostly the same since man went to space. Scrap some real estate and build a proper hot redundant main core. Seriously.)
  • Inertia (An object ejected will not accelerate together with the ship once the ship is under burn again.)
  • Interstellar travel (HIGHLY debatable, as this is a frigde-problem. Do they show the ship at the end with the drive towards the planet?)
  • Credit Songs (Sorry. No. Just no.)

Also, a 2×120-years ROUND TRIP is such a MIND BOGGLINGLY STOOPID IDEA WHAT THE SHIT I LITERALLY CANNOT EVEN RIGHT NOW! GAH! GAAAAHHHHH!

Also, the longer I think about the plot, the more it creeps me out. Stockholm syndrome in space with terrible engineering. Still a good movie. And beautiful to look at. But creepy.

[And don’t come with “but movie”. This thing tries hard enough to do the hard sci fi stuff that engineering rants are fully justified.]

Lego Batman
2/3 “oh Gott was passiert hier grade”-Awesomeness, 1/3 “oh Gott was passiert hier grade”-Entsetzen.

Hidden Figures
Klare Empfehlung.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 might be a pretty awesome thing. Just sayin’.

King Arthur
Was für ein Spektakel. Tolle Bilder, tolle Effekte, großes Kino, geht angucken.

Fluch der Karibik – Salazars Rache
Meh.

Hm. Mehr so meh. Okay, aber mehr auch nicht.

Mad Max Fury Road: Black and Chrome Edition
Well. It’s still Fury Road, so it’s still one of the awesome-ests pieces of art in existence.
The B&W really does it for some parts, put kills others. I am unsure. But as an artsy fartsy collectors piece? Pure gold.

Erkenntnisse der Nacht:

  1. Man sollte immer mal wieder die Rocky Horror Picture Show gucken.
  2. Repo ist ziemlich abgedreht. Aber irgendwie auch gut.

Waterloo
Ein durchaus beeindruckend inszeniertes Schlachten und Sterben. Der getriebene Materialaufwand hat sich durchaus gelohnt.

Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle

Holy Shit. Die Film-des-Jahres-Debatte ist zumindest für mich beendet. Ein großartiges Machwerk.

Other Things Thinged

So… Oxenfree.
Or rather the first playthrough, as I’ll most likely do this one again at some point.
Everyone survived and all is well and I cannot shake the feeling that I’ve done something horribly horribly wrong.
And yeah. I like it. Not full blown horror, more of a weird tales-things.

70h Storyline, 25h exploratory busywork.
Heart of Stone, here I come.

7 Stunden Heart of Stone.

OH FOR FUCKS SAKE!
I’ve had insanely great fun with the chosen end-path of Blood and Wine this afternoon. I have so much love for what they did that I sat here literally squealing with glee at times.
And now there’s the bossfight, multistaged, no savepoints in between, nonskippable transitions between stages, and HARD. And this seriously overshadows the whole of this otherwise brilliant DLC.

So… this would have been Blood&Wine, save some exploration busywork.
And with the small exception of the incredibly ill-designed bossfight I rambled about earlier, this DLC is indeed better than what some people might sell as a whole game.
The complete turnaround from the main games brown-greyish landscapes, a nice storyline, and especially (down the rabbit hole I took) a truely amazing endgame. The warm-and-fuzzy-happiness came back after the bossfight.
I’ll clean up the map, and then I guess I’ll clean some disc space for ME:A. Maybe.
However, if you did not play the Witcher before, I can just recommend the third part and its DLC over and over.

Das wäre also ButtCreed: Black Flag gewesen.

I hereby place Va11 Hall-A among the best, if not as the best cyberpunk game I’ve played.
YMMV, and I might be in a late night-post game-high, but still, this thing is awesome.

Der Rote Reiter, das neue Album von den Apokalyptischen Reitern.
Holy Shit. Klare Empfehlung.

Tacoma
I wont call it “game”, but it was a nice story experience. If you can grab it during a sale, you should!
